Trojans destroy Green Hope to reach NCHSAA East Finals
SWAC Champion Garner upsets #2-seed Green Hope in dominating fashion 56-39 to advance to the NCHSAA East Finals. The Trojans, seeded 3rd, erase an early 14-0 deficit and take advantage of a missed Falcon PAT to take 28-27 lead after halftime. It would not matter as Garner pours it on in the second half, with Daiveon Carrington rushing for 127 yards in the Trojans 35 point half with 3TDs & the Trojan defense holding the Falcons to just 36 ground yards. Nolan McLean throws TD passes to Donovan Evans from 31 yards & Spencer Stephenson 23-yards to knot the game at 21-21 with 25 seconds to halftime. After the Falcons rally for last second TD but miss the PAT, the underdog Trojans trail 27-21 at halftime. Carrington 27-yard score at 6:59 of the 3rd gives the good guys 28-27 lead they do not relinquish. On the next Trojan drive, Garner was facing 4th &8, Prestige Bellamy converts the faked punt to set up Carrington 15-yard TD run for a 35-27 lead. After GHope scores for just a little life, Carrington rumbles 56 yards with the ensuing kickoff and caps the 4 play drive from 7 yards out for 42-33 Garner lead with 8:07 to go. On the Falcons next play from scrimmage, Carrington blasts the QB and Marcus Davis takes the errant throw 45 yards for Trojan score and 49-33 margin. Green Hope uses an untimely Trojan flag to extend their drive and score, and then grab the onside kickoff. But Trojan defense thwarts any comeback attempt with sacks by Carrington and Tyler Peacock huge 12-yard loss on sack. After Peacock QB pressure incomplete, the home team gets 14 on 4th & 25 for Garner ball with 4:54 left. After Jaydin Dixon picks up first down at their 42, the Falcons unravel with consecutive personal foul calls. Davis caps the drive with 11-yard TD run and send Garner to their 9th East Finals at top-seed Wake Forest next Friday night. The Trojan defense led by Laytavion Haywood & Carrington 10 tackles each and Tyler Peacock with 9 stops, record 6 sacks and 11 QB pressures. Garner defense with NaDarius Thompson (3TFL) and Davis is relentless posting 11 tackles for loss on the evening.
