Your webmaster prides himself on being technologically-savvy, but has held onto medieval habits such as the ol’ morning paper on occasion. Several recent print and online articles about my Trojans, in the very wise words of Brandon Byars, “grind my gears”!! I do not subscribe to the “any news is good news” philosophy. When a certain local paper refers to a “choke” by our basketball team or an article about the fantastic IB program available at GMHS only quotes close-minded parents, with preconceived notions (be sure to welcome the Perkins’ next year everybody….), it needs a response. No quotes or comments from any of the 2400 households who attend Garner and know how great the school and staff are. No doubt these articles are exactly why Garner has some unproven reputation. Kudos to the 13 Johnston County students who were named Teaching Fellows and listed in the paper. Wouldn’t it have been great if GMHS’ seven awardees had been listed as well? Or maybe a mention of the 10-1 Lady Trojan softball team? It is a Garner paper, right????
An ill-fated partnership earlier this school year eroded due to the “same ol’, same ol’” digression away from positive stories about the terrific students at GMHS and into a crime blog about the bad apples. We have all heard “bad news sells….”. I disagree and the only way to prove it as a Garner parent and supporter is to choose to support businesses and yes, papers who have more respect for the great things going on at GMHS.
I have time and will not cower from a fight so if you happen across more backhanded slaps at our school and our town, feel free to forward to me at phillip.ayscue@inbox.com and we will shine the light on any of these culprits so you can choose whether you wish to support them.
